Assistant Garden Center Manager

We are looking for a motivated, energetic, assistant garden center manager! Ideal candidate should be a self-motivated, team-player, with management experience in garden center/nursery operations that has a passion for inspiring people to grow. We are looking for an individual who is customer service focused, extroverted and loves meeting new people. The ideal candidate will enjoy selling a product or service, motivating others to do the same, working hard and supporting others on their team. They will love a fast paced work environment and to get their hands dirty. They will also have a thorough knowledge of plants that grow in Iowa.


  • This position reports directly to the garden center manager and nursery manager. The main responsibility is to assist with sales operations, customer service and staff.
  • Assists with opening or closing and cashiering functions.
  • Use of point of sale software, cash register and credit card machine purchases for individual sales.
  • Help customers with plant or product selections, obtaining special requested materials, payments, loading and preparing products for delivery.
  • Identifies and rectifies customer complaints and service suggestions.
  • Answering phone calls and emails on general plant or product questions.
  • Assists with pricing of plants and hard goods and creating signage for products.
  • Assists with creating marketing, sales and promotions for the store to drive customer traffic.
  • Work with vendors for delivery schedules, credit, and returns.

General requirements:

  • At least 2 years horticultural management experience.
  • Bachelor in horticulture preferred.
  • Someone who loves to inspire their team to grow and leads & manages well.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.
  • Written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be fast paced on a computer and able to work Microsoft Office.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and to work in an outdoor atmosphere regardless of the weather.
  • Flexible hours and ability to adapt to changing schedule, we are retail and weekends are a must.
  • Valid drivers license.

Landscape Installer – Planting & Construction

Ted Lare Design Build is looking for motivated, self-starters to pursue a career in the landscaping industry.  Previous experience in the landscaping field is a plus, but not required.  A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and the desire to learn new skills is required for success.  You will likely be exposed to both planting and construction tasks in your first year on the job including:

  • Creation of Planting Beds
  • Building stone walls – limestone, boulder, etc.
  • Building patios out of natural stone and man-made pavers
  • Constructing Paths and Stairways
  • Fire Pit Construction

Applicants must be tobacco free in the workplace. Wages start at $13-$15/hr or more based on experience. We provide uniforms and benefits. Generally, our work hours are 7:45-5:00, Monday through Friday.  Overtime opportunities on Saturdays from time to time, but not regularly throughout the year.

Landscape Supervisor – Planting & Construction

Ted Lare Design Build is looking for motivated, self-starters to fill an immediate position for a landscaping construction supervisor.  If you are looking to further your career, we are interested in forming a long term relationship with talented, hardworking individuals.  This is a working supervisor position leading a crew of 2-3 people. Various tasks include:

  • Creation of Planting Beds
  • Building stone walls – limestone, boulder, etc.
  • Building patios out of natural stone and man-made pavers
  • Constructing Paths and Stairways
  • Fire Pit Construction
  • Water Feature Construction
  • Grading and Site Work as Required
  • Skid Loader / Excavator Operation
  • Laying out jobs and interacting with clients on the job site

Applicants must be tobacco free in the workplace, have a valid driver’s license, and a clean driving record.  We will run an MVR on all driving records. Position starting at $16-20/hr or more based on experience. Applicants may qualify for a salary position with 2 months off in the winter, if skills and work ethic are exceptional.  We provide uniforms and benefits.

Landscape Designer / Sales / Project Manager

We are currently looking for a motivated individual to join our Design and Sales Team before for the 2016 season. Ideally, all candidates would have a degree in Landscape Architecture and 5 years of experience. Design Build experience is desirable, but not absolutely required. This is a salary position with sales commission and benefits, including a company car. Salary compensation would start at $48,000/year or more depending on experience. In addition to salary, commission is paid out monthly as well.

Job Description

Landscape Designers will be responsible for each project they take on from start to finish, including the following tasks:

  • Initial Client Meetings
  • Surveys of required properties
  • Developing all drawings required for projects — plans, sketches, renderings — tailored to the scope of the project
  • Developing estimates and quotes
  • Project presentations to clients
  • Management of landscape construction and planting through completion of the project
  • Maintaining ongoing relationships with clients


  • A candidate must have good time management skills and multitasking capabilities, as it is common to work on multiple projects at any given time
  • Drafting — Hand Drawing, AutoCAD, or Dynascape are all acceptable
  • Sketching / Rendering — The ability to communicate ideas through quick sketches and detailed renderings if required
  • Communication Skills — good presentation skills and one-on-one communication skills
  • Plant Knowledge — back ground knowledge of mid-west plants and general care of plants
  • Construction Knowledge — must have a good grasp of construction techniques and have the ability to instruct others how to execute them
  • Creativity — the ability to develop multiple creative concepts for a given property and push the boundaries of what is expected
