Spring Gardening Classes 2017
We offer a large range of gardening classes each year on the most current gardening trends. Our classes contain a nice mix of information and hands on activities. Grab your best friends and come out for a day of fun at the garden center, you are sure to learn something new and have some fun creating a little beauty for your home!

Class Registration
If you wish to attend one of our gardening classes we recommend you order online using the Buy This Class button below or call ahead as many of our classes fill to capacity. We may not have enough materials for you to participate if you do not pre-register. To ensure a spot in our classes we request that you order online or call to pre-pay for the class of your choice. This is to cover the costs of the materials that we will pre-purchase and reserve for you. Please call our garden center at 515-981-1075 with a credit card to reserve your spot for class.

Cancellation/ Refund Policy
• If you need to cancel your reservation for a class you may receive a full re-fund if you cancel on or before the Monday before the class.
• If you call on Tuesday or after the week before the class you will receive in-store credit in the form of a gift card that can be picked up upon your next stop at the store.
• If you do not call in to cancel your spot and do not show up for the class there will be no refund given.


Kokedama String Gardens Saturday March 18th, at 9am Class Fee $39
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Anita

A variant of bonsai, these Japanese String Gardens have become an internet sensation! You will learn how to take a plant out of pot and to encase the roots in a ball of moss, tying it and then hanging the plant with string or displaying in a clay dish. Many plants can be grown this way including ferns, orchids, house plants, African violets, and more! You will get to create two of your own string garden plants to take home.


Orchids Everywhere Saturday March 18th, - 11amClass Fee $39
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Ryan

Learn how easy it is to grow orchids in your home. We will discuss the easiest orchids to grow that are best suited to your conditions, how to avoid common mistakes with growing orchids, keeping plants healthy, and how to get orchids to rebloom. Once the informational session has been completed you will select an orchid and transplant it into a new container to take home with you.


Living Wall Class Saturday March 18th, at 2pm Class Fee $80
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Melissa

Vertical Gardening are fabulous and for good reasons! Vertical gardens save space, create living art and allow for easy maintenance gardening. In this class you will get to create and plant a 10 pocket vertical wall using 10 different herbs, flowers or succulents. Your wall can be hung inside in a sunny spot or outdoors. We will discuss vertical wall design, maintenance, and care.


Proper Pruning Class Saturday March 25th, at 2pm Class Fee $10
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Ryan

Learn all the pruning basics to keep your plants beautiful & healthy. We will discuss proper pruning techniques, tools, and timing for trimming evergreens, roses, shrubs, and trees. After the informational session the class will move outside and class participants will be shown proper pruning techniques and how to use several of the more common pruning tools. Class notes and slides will be distributed via email after the class. Bring your questions! You will receive a $10 gift card at the end of this class for the garden center.


Terrific Tufa Saturday April 1st, at 9am Class Fee $39
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Anita

Hypertufa pots and planters are an attractive alternative to concrete and stone planters. They have the look of aged concrete or stone but are lightweight and can be created in a variety of shapes & sizes. In this class you will create your own weathered looking hypertufa garden planter. You will create a planter by filling a mold with a mixture of cement, peat moss, and perlite. You will need to return in a week to pick up your project once it has dried. This is a fun but messy project so please dress accordingly.


Dwarf Conifer Gardens Saturday 1st, at 12pm Class Fee $49

Do you have a small space and can only grow things in pots? In this class you will learn about miniature conifers and other small plants to create miniature landscapes. Class will cover types of plants, general care, overwintering techniques and pruning plants to keep them in top shape. Each student will get to choose 2 miniature conifers and a ground cover plant plus accents such as stone & moss to create a unique miniature landscape.


The Dirt on Dirt: Creating Better Soils Sunday April 2nd, at 11am Class Fee $10
Class Location - Ted Lare Design Build - Presented by Kelly

Do you have poor soil for growing? Then this class is for you! Learn how to create better soil for growing your landscape plants and vegetable gardens. We will discuss soil amendments and how to use various organic matter to create better soils. The roles of tilling, chemicals, and other amendments will also be discussed. You will receive a $10 gift card at the end of this class to be used in the garden center.


Veggie Gardening Planning and Design Sunday April 2nd, at 2pm Class Fee $10

Would you like to create a beautiful yet functional vegetable garden? Come to this class to learn about how to plant and design your garden space from smaller to larger areas. Topics will include containers, raised beds, rowing and spacing , sunlight considerations, and garden aesthetics. You will receive a $10 gift card at the end of this class for the garden center.


Colorful Cottage Gardens Saturday April 8th, at 10am Class Fee $10

Come to this class to learn all about creating a cottage garden and be inspired on how to color outside the lines! We will show pictures of cottage gardens, garden designs and plants to use in a cottage garden. We will also discuss the many varieties of cut flowers you can use in your garden. Woodland Gardens Saturday April 8th, 2017 at 1pm Class Fee $10

Is your yard graced by beautiful mature trees? Even very shaded gardens can have bright beautiful blooms and interest at every corner! Come to this class to learn about how it is not just blooms but also foliage that can add vivid colors and shapes to your shaded space! We will go over the absolute best shrubs, perennials and annuals that will brighten up a darker wooded lot. From delicate ground covers to perennials and even small flowering trees, we'll have you saying, Who needs sun? when you can have a beautiful woodland garden! Receive a $10 gift card at this class.


Veggie Gardening 101 Sunday April 9th, at 11am Class Fee $10

Are you new to gardening or just need some growing great tasting veggies? Take this class to learn all the basics of veggie gardening. We will discuss amending soil to create a great growing environment for you plants, veggie seed and plant selection, planting techniques, common garden pests and more! Bring your questions. Vegetable Garden Innovative Small Space Solutions Sunday April 9th, at 2pm Class Fee $10

Running out of space but still want to eat and grow more fresh veggies? How about growing up rather that out? Learn about the many different techniques and ideas being used in cities and farms all around the world We will discuss trellising, arches, vertical towers, roof plantings, container gardens and hanging baskets Innovative material uses and recycled materials will also be discussed.


Magnificent Magnolias Saturday April 15th, 2017 at 1pm Class Fee $10

Come one, come all to a class that says it all about Magnolias! We'll have you wanting a Magnolia of your very own as our resident Magnolia expert goes over everything you want to know about these prehistoric trees! The perfect tree for small yards and traffic-stopping in full bloom we will go over all the newest colors out there and the requirements they need leaving you with a marvelous feeling about Magnolias! Plant Grow Fly Saturday April 22nd, 2017 at 10am Class Fee FREE

Have you noticed anything missing from your garden lately? Monarch butterflies, North Americas most recognized butterfly, are vanishing. Join Jessie Lowry from Blank Park Zoo to learn about Monarch butterflies, their lifecycles, habitats, host and nectar and food sources and what you can do to help them. We believe that no effort is too small and that each and every one of us can do our part to help pollinators thrive just by planting butterfly gardens in our yards! Grapevines & Wines Saturday May 6th, 10am to Noon Class Fee $10

Are you interested in growing grapes to create your own wine? Come to this class by local grape expert Mike White from Iowa State Extension. Mike will discuss the Iowa wine industry and how to grow grapes for fresh eating and wines in Iowa. Bring your questions. Personal Orchards Saturday May 6th, at 1pm Class Fee $10

Do you want to learn how to grow fruit trees? We will discuss the types of fruit trees that can be grown in Iowa including pears, peaches, apples, apricots, plums and cherries. We will discuss planting, pruning and harvesting. We will also discuss typical pests and diseases for fruit trees and how to treat them. Bring your questions. Small Fruit Gardening Saturday May 6th, at 3pm Class Fee $10

You dont always have to have large spaces to grow quality fruit. Come learn the many techniques for growing your own small fruit garden whether it is in a yard, porch, balcony or farm. We will discuss blueberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. Quality edible fruit can be produced with the right techniques we will discuss potting and containers, trellises and other structures. Bring your questions. How to Grow the Best Tomatoes Ever! Sunday May 7th, at 11am Class Fee $10

Come discover the secrets to growing beautiful and bountiful tomatoes. We will discuss the different varieties of tomatoes, planting times, cultural requirements, fertilizing requirements, watering, and other tricks to get the best tasting and most productive tomato plants. Knotty Nail Art Class Saturday May 20th, at 10am Class Fee $40

Come make to our art in the garden day, do a little shopping with local artists and then make a little art yourself. Becky with the Knotty Nail will be teaching this class on making string art using wood, nails and colorful string. You will get to choose from different flower or garden art patterns for your fun art piece that you will make and take home with you.


Wine & Canvas Painting Class Saturday May 20th, at 1pm Class Fee $35

Come on out to the garden center and let your inner artist out to create the beautiful masterpiece pictured here. Leave your cares at the door and dive in to the paint party taught by a local artist, absolutely no experience is necessary. Do not forget to bring your wine and enjoy some sips and an afternoon of fun with your best girlfriends. This class coincides with our spring art show so plan to make a day of it and shop with local artists before painting.


Irises Sunday May 21st, at 11am Class Fee $10

Do you have a love of irises? Then this class is for you! Our resident expert, Kelly Jensen, raises 165 different varieties of irises and has some wonderful hands on experience he will share. Learn the best time to plant, how to propagate, splitting, hybridizing and fertilizing irises. He will share pictures and examples from his experiences.


Peonies Sunday May 21st, at 1pm Class Fee $10

Peonies are an old fashioned favorite flower known for their fragrance and beautiful blooms that always arrive around Mothers Day. Wither your new to Peonies or inheriting some already in your yard, this class will teach you everything you need to know about how to care for your peonies and how to deal with the dreaded drooping commonly dealt with these flowers. We will cover tried and true heirloom varieties your mom or grandma grew to the newest released cultivars you can add to your garden! Come learn why every garden should have peonies! Hydrangeas & Roses Sunday May 21st, at 2pm Class Fee $10

Roses are one of the most symbolic and worldly recognized flowers, they are known for their sheer beauty and fragrance. Hydrangeas are known for their tolerance of shade and sun as well as toughness. Some people believe they are difficult to grow but you don't need a conservatory to have beautiful Roses or Hydrangeas! This class will cover the best varieties and the care needed to have the best and brightest roses and the most heavenly hydrangeas. How to Create a Lush Green Lawn Saturday May 27th, at 10am Class Fee $10

Do you long for a lush green lawn? Come to this class to learn how to create that beautiful perfect lawn. Topics will include different types of turf, cultural habits, soil, fertilization and mowing heights and frequencies.
